Natural Language Technologies: Current Status and Future Evolution

The last five years have seen dramatic advances in Natural Language Understanding (NLU) and Generation (G), with increasingly large language models trained on large corpuses. These models have moved the needle on academic challenge sets, and are increasingly finding their way into commercial applications.

At the same time there has been discussion of the limitation of this brute-force, statistical approach, and arguments that this approach alone will reach diminishing returns.

I will discuss these issues in general, and their possible ramifications in healthcare.

Yoav Shoham is professor emeritus of computer science at Stanford University. A leading AI expert, Prof. Shoham is Fellow of AAAI, ACM and the Game Theory Society.

Among his awards are the IJCAI Research Excellence Award, the AAAI/ACM Allen Newell Award, and the ACM/SIGAI Autonomous Agents Research Award. Prof. Shoham has founded several AI companies, including the latest being AI21 Labs, which focuses on narual langauge technology. Prof. Shoham also thre founder of the AI Index initiative (www.AIindex.org), which tracks global AI activity and progress.
